When taking pictures in the sun, try to photograph children in a shady area. If this is not possible,  look for an angle where the sun is not directly reflecting in the child's face. By doing this, you get softer light in the face and soft shadows are formed under the eyes and the nose.

Please keep in mind that the exposure settings listed above only work for the lighting conditions I had when I took the picture.
